Symptoms of Pet Anxiety & Nervousness

Anxiety in pets is a common problem. Pets can exhibit their fear or anxiety in a number of different ways or causes ranging from a visit to the vet, separation from the owner, changes to their routine, loud sounds like fireworks, moving to a new home, or even small children.

Although some pets are high-strung by nature, anxiety can also affect pets that are left alone for long periods of time. As a result they can become stressed and bored due to the lack of social contact. Pets also pick up on your mood and feelings, so if you exhibiting anxious or stressed feelings most of time, your pet could too.

Common anxiety conditions include separation anxiety, which typically occurs when pets are left alone and separated from their owners. Destructive behavior such as continuous barking or whining, chewed-up furniture, scratched doors, or soiled floors could be the result. Noise phobia occurs when pets are afraid of loud noises such as thunderstorms, firecrackers, gunshots, vacuum cleaners, or hairdryers. When animals are frightened by loud noises they can run and hide. But in trying to flee, they may endanger themselves by jumping through windows, digging, or running away. Lastly, social anxiety most often occurs when pets have not been socialized at an early age. They can be fearful and overwhelmed by crowds, small groups of people, or other animals. Pets can feel trapped and cornered, in turn causing them to react aggressively or run.

Other common associated symptoms include excessive barking, nervousness, tremors or shivering, drooling and panting, pacing, and a poor appetite.

Other Treatments for Symptoms of Pet Anxiety & Nervousness

Support feelings of calm and balance in your pet with these tips:

  • Be consistent with your reaction to your pet. The whole family needs to follow the same routine when dealing with your pet’s anxieties, otherwise your pet could become confused and even more insecure.

  • Do not reprimand your pet for being nervous – it will only compound the problem.

  • Feed your pet a healthy, well-balanced diet that boosts his or her immune system.

  • Exercise your pet regularly.

  • Remember that your pet can pick up on your stress levels – make an effort to calm down and relax around your pet.

  • If your pet is scared of thunder or fireworks, bring him or her inside and away from doors and windows.

  • If your pet displays signs of separation anxiety before you leave, reduce your level of interaction or provide some kind of distraction (for example, a new toy or long-lasting treat).

  • When moving to a new home, pets could become stressed. Take them to your new home before moving in so they can investigate the surroundings and become familiar with them. Give him or her some treats and play in the new home so they associate something positive with the experience.

  • The arrival of a new baby can also cause anxiety for your pet. Continue to give him or her lots of attention and try to maintain their normal routine best as possible.
